Mysterious petrol smell

Post by Geoff Butcher »

Lately I've been smelling petrol, particularly when I've got the window open. There's no sign of a leak under the bonnet, and no smell. Also no smell under the back, and the bottom of the tank looks dry. The engine starts and runs normally. Where can it be coming from? And no, I don't carry a spare can in the back!

Is it worse when the tank is full?
If so look for perforation on the top of the tank, perished rubber breather pipes in the same place or the gasket under the gauge sender.

Have you checked the due date of your Old Spice?

Tank is very low at the moment. It's had a new gasket recently, but I haven't checked the breather. And my Old Spice, or whatever it is, definitely doesn't smell of petrol... 8-)
