FUEL TANK

I always thought that the Gold fuel tank was from a mini van, but I think I have that wrong

Is it a standard Metro tank? And, is it covered with a glass fibre sheath?

I think mine has sprung a leak so am looking to replace it ASAP

Yes just a Metro tank, mk1 I think? with 3 1/2" cut off the filler neck.

Latest news on the fuel tank:

Despite my best efforts, and expense, the resurrection of my old tank has failed! I have cleaned and painted the outside and sealed the interior (which was remarkable rust free considering its age).

But, the reason I did all this - the non-functioning fuel sender unit has proven to be the worst problem. It stopped working because the rust on the locking ring became too advanced and there was a loss of electrical integrity! Still, Nil Desperandum I thought. I confirmed the sender was still working and attempted to replace it. However, the rusty locking ring started to disintegrate on reassembly and would not seal properly. I tried to help it out with some self-tapping screws to hold it in place, but, it leaks like the proverbial.

So, after two weeks of effort and wasted money I give up - the tank is headed for the scrap yard. I am going to have a bespoke aluminium tank made ASAP (because replacement Metro tanks are non-existent as far as I can see). I will continue to use Ethanol free unleaded (BP Ultimate) so I am hoping that any incompatibility between aluminium and ethanol will be minimised.

This is what I intended to do right at the start but was persuaded to try and refurb the original....I wish I had followed my original plan now

I have sent the old tank to these people: www.proalloy.co.uk who will see if they can make a suitable tank to fill the space.

If they come good, I have told them that there might be more folks needing a tank as our cars are all getting to be that age.

well, here we are a month later and no response from ProAlloy....I guess they are not so keen to make a tank for me after all!

Of course, now I dont have a tank at all so I cannot consider finding someone to repair my old one!! This is really beginning to tick me off

thought I would bring you up to date on my tank problem.

I got my old tank back from Pro-Alloy and have decided to have a go at fixing it myself !!

To that end, I have chopped out the old Sender unit mounting and made a new one, which my mate welded in for me.

Next, I am going to do a leak test and am hopeful that all will be well because the amount of mounting screws (instead of the old locking ring) should be enough to hold it all together (see photo).

Final photo of repaired fuel sender unit mounting....still wet from paint. Looks a bit messy due to the thick cork gasket, but so long as it is functional, who cares?
Leak check: OK
Electrical continuity: OK

Going back on the car tomorrow !!
